Sterling silver is asilver alloy. This means that the piece is 92.5% solid silver. Silverplate, on the other hand, is made out of a different metal such as copper, brass, or nickel. After which, the piece is plated, or covered with a coating of silver. We only purchase sterling silver.
How can I tell sterling from silver plated items?
Most of the sterling that we see here comes from the U.S. or Great Britain. These items will always be marked with the word "STERLING", the number "925", or the image of a lion. If they are not marked with one of these three items, you can assume that they are plated. If the pieces are foreign, they may not have one of these marks, and we would have to test them for you.
